Review: Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas

“We were perfect together. Until we met.”

I can’t help but smile at the words in her letter. She misses me.

In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.

It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…

And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.

Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?

Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?

F*ck it. I need to meet her.

I just don’t expect to hate what I find.

He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.

Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his number or picture or something.

He could be gone forever.

Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

Oh, HI!!

Ladies & Gentlemen are you ready to rummmble read one of the best books of 2016?!?!?!?!?! Cause, hawt dayum you guys!! Penelope Douglas is on top of her writing game! Never ceasing to blow my mind book after book, always one upping her last works. I'm essentially at a loss for words after finishing Punk 57 in all it's poignant potency- meshing reality and fiction into one hell of a read!

This fangirl is down for the count and out cold!
Penelope for the TKO!

So many emotions were evoked with the flip of each page. Normally I devour Douglas' books but with this one I had to pace myself. It's complex and profound, almost suffocating at times, trudging up past experiences and memories; those meant to be left buried in tragic teenage times. Oh the joyous tribulations of adolescence and finding ones self. The messages within are of importance, beyond significant. Punk 57 is a cruel yet powerful story of Ryen's struggles to fit in yet still be true to herself.

"We've been here before. The uncertainty, the self-hate, the powerlessness... it's all so familiar."

It's not all austere. With 'Penelope Douglas style' twists and turns, your heart will be racing, your jaw will be dropping. You might end up dropping your pantaloos too or end up sliding off a chair *wink* Nobody does teenage sexy times quite like the Douglasinator! Yeah, you know exactly what I'm talking about lol *fans self*

“We were perfect together. Until we met.”

GAH! What I wouldn't do to be able to read this again for the first time.
